1. SURVEY ON HISTORICAL RESEARCH ON CHILDHOOD AND YOUTH.

Hello Colleagues:
The Society for the History of Children and Youth (SHCY) invites you to participate in a survey designed to inform our efforts to advance the production and dissemination of historical research on childhood and youth.
This questionnaire has been written for any researcher or professional engaged with historical work on childhood and youth across disciplines, topics, regions, periods (etc.). We hope to better understand your backgrounds, interests, and preferences regardless of whether you are a SHCY member or have previously attended our events.

The survey can be completed with any hand-held device or computer with an internet connection. It takes about 10 minutes – depending on how much you wish to write. Link to it at: https://uwo.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cwMWJSdqqFyFqoB

A small amount of your time will help us do better than guessing after or projecting our own limited experiences upon what we know is a very diverse group of people.

Many Thanks, Patrick J. Ryan, SHCY President, pryan2@uwo.ca

3. CfP: LOCAL AND REGIONAL SCHOOL HISTORY
Special issue editors: Ning de Coninck-Smith, Henrik Román and Johanna Ringarp

We invite contributions to a special issue of the Nordic Journal of Studies in Educational Policy – NordSTEP. NordSTEP is an open access peer-reviewed academic journal published by the University College of Gävle in collaboration with Uppsala University and the University College of Southeast Norway and Taylor & Francis Group.

Local school history has a very special value because of its authenticity. Such studies may on good grounds claim to come closer to school (the activities taking place there) compared to historical studies restricted to national curricular documents or text books and other educational material. On the other hand, there is a risk that local school history only provides fragments, story-telling of individual cases, disconnected to one another and disconnected to actions and structures at other levels or arenas. In other words, historical studies of local school activities and local policy are essential because they help to problematize, refine and even question the idea of school as a national unit. However, such studies have to be contextualized regionally, nationally and even internationally, as school reforms always (and more and more intensively during the last two centuries) have been related to international trends and ideas.

This special issue aims to emphasize the importance of historical studies of local activities in schools and in local or regional school policy, in order to understand and explain national and international trends and reforms in education. There is a substantial variation in how different local actors, communities and regions have handled national school policy, and furthermore there is a variation in how different countries have taken local variation into account, when executing a national school policy. We invite contributions which empirically and/or theoretically illustrate and investigate local and regional school history in relation to national reform aspirations and effects during the 19th or 20th century.
We are interested in a wide range of local school history research covering different
– school forms (including both child, youth and adult education);
– focal points (e.g. pedagogical, professional and political);
– horizontal and/or vertical dimensions (e.g. local, regional, national and international).

Contributions should be written in English and we recommend that they should not exceed 7000 words (excl. references). APA referencing conventions should be followed. Manuscripts will undergo peer-review, and will be published if approved by reviewers and accepted by the editorial board.

Important dates:
• Deadline for manuscript submission: 31. October 2017
• Comments from the editors and reviewers: by the end of December 2017
• Deadline for final version: 1. March 2017
• Expected publication of the special issue edition: April/May 2017

How to submit your contribution:

– NordSTEP is an open access E-journal with online submission at http://www.tandfonline.com/toc/znst20/current

– If you experience technical problems during the submission process, please contact NordSTEP executive editor Tine S Prøitz, Tine.Proitz@usn.no

4. CALL FOR PAPERS NORDIC JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL HISTORY (PÅMINNELSE)

NERA 2018 – Educational Research: Boundaries, Breaches and Bridges. 8-10 March 2018 in Oslo
Network coordinator: Magnus Hultén, Linköping University, magnus.hulten@liu.se
All proposals are welcome! 1 November 2018 deadline for abstract submission.
NERA 2018 will explore how boundaries between knowledge fields and actors are challenged and how new boundaries are constructed in educational sciences today.

Key questions to be addressed include:
• How are boundaries transcended and (re)defined in the educational sciences?
• How is the traditional organization of the educational sciences challenged in the wake of interdisciplinary research and user involvement?
• What opportunities and challenges lie in disciplinary demarcations, when it comes to balancing productive exchange across boundaries?
NFPF/NERA, the main association for educational researchers in the Nordic countries. It is a basis for cooperation and development of educational research. It is open for everyone that has an interest in educational research in the Nordic context. Historical perspectives on the main theme of the conference are especially welcome
