2. SEMINAR: MEMORY IN THE MEKONG: REGIONAL IDENTITY, SCHOOLS, AND POLITICS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA, STOCKHOLM
Speaker: Will Brehm, Associate Professor of Education and International Development, Institute of Education, University College London & FreshEd Podcast.
Date: 16 May 2022, 2.00 PM
Venue: Room 2411, Department of Education, Stockholm University
In 2020, UNESCO Bangkok published 25 school lessons in hopes of creating a shared history in Southeast Asia. Its effort is part of a larger project by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to construct a regional identity as part of its Socio-Cultural Community, which is slated to begin in 2025. National schools are seen as vital institutions in the development of a regional identity. In this presentation, I detail the history of UNESCO’s shared histories project, some of its paradoxes, and the politics of its implementation in Cambodia. The presentation launches the book, Memory in the Mekong: Regional Identity, Schools and Politics in Southeast Asia (TC Press), which was published in March 2022.
Discussant: Joakim Landahl, Stockholm University.

4. PROF. METTE BUCHARDT CELEBRATED AS ONE OF THE DANISH WOMEN OF THE YEAR
On Friday May 6, Professor and Head of CfU Mette Buchardt was honored as one of the 100 inspirational women of the year in politics, research and business at a lunch at Carlsberg Academy by The Women of the Year Network. The purpose of the celebratory lunch and award is to establish a network between academia and public and private organisations. The committee elects 100 women based on their outstanding achievements in and outside academia. The initative aims to create a supportive and professional network.
Professor Mette Buchardt has become part of the network for her expertise on the intersections of educational and social reforms in European welfare states. She has written extensively on Modernity, secularization and about migrants’ impact on and experience of the welfare state both in a historical and contemporary perspective.
Recently, Buchardt received funding from the Independent Research Fund Denmark to a three and a half year project on the education of newcomers in the Danish welfare state. Here she and Politics and Society colleague from Aalborg University, Associate Professor Karen N. Breidahl, will manage the project exploring organizational responses to migration between 1960s and 2010s and the responses’ influence on national policy. The project is set to start in August 2022.
Mette Buchardt is also alongside Christian Ydesen the conference convenor of the 8th nordic education history conference
