Freedom and equality have become passionately contested objects of dispute and challenges in education policy in a new way: While critics lament the persistent inequality in education due to factors such as race, class and gender, others want to preserve the freedom of education from federal and ideologically legitimised interventions from different actors. For some time now, some have seen a new tyranny of freedom emerging under the sign of libertarianism and “neoliberalism”, while others want to free education from the shackles of a supposedly excessive egalitarianism. At the same time, it is a question of the relationship between freedom and equality in relation to questions of discrimination in education, as the current debate about abolishing affirmative action in US education and higher education policy shows. Especially in the wake of the immense ecological challenges of the Anthropocene as well as the debates about human nature, the relationship between freedom and equality has proven to be highly conflictual.
Thus far, these debates have hardly been reflected in the history of education, although the historiography of education can make an important contribution by revealing backgrounds and developments and making the debates recognisable as the result of an often long and eventful history. The current problematic situations and controversies therefore make it worthwhile to make freedom and equality the subject of educational historical analysis and reflection in new ways – for example, as a problem history of the present or as a history of relatively stable structural elements of educational institutions. This is the aim of the conference Freedom and Equality. Conflicts in the History of Education, for which the organisers welcome contributions in the form of individual papers or panels.
We invite the submission of individual or panel proposals that address, among others, the following questions and thematic areas in the history of education – also in transnational and transcultural perspectives:
• The relationship between political and pedagogical concepts: freedom through education, freedom in education
• Dimensions of equality in educational discourses and practices (equality as equality of men or as equality of whites, etc.)
• Coding of free/unfree, equal/unequal in an educational-historical perspective • Biology and human nature – (measuring) freedom and equality in education systems
• Justice debates on freedom and equality, e.g., concerning the question of gender relations
• Egalitarianism, libertarianism, “neoliberalism” in education
• Equality and freedom in education policy practice (compulsory schooling, school choice, parental rights, public schools, open curricula, etc.) and in the context of unequal education
• Equality and inequality in schools
• Racism, Apartheid and pedagogy
• Education in colonial and post-colonial movements and societies • “Equality” and “freedom” in pedagogy and education in authoritarian regimes
• Education in ethnonationalist and populist movements
• The Anthropocene as a challenge to equality and freedom in education

Submission guidelines
• Individual paper: A proposal for an individual paper consists of a title, an abstract (up to 400 words) and references.
• Panels: A panel submission consists of a collection of a maximum of 3 papers, and includes the panel title, a rationale for the topic and an overview of the panel composition (up to 400 words); for each of the papers, authors need to submit a title, an abstracts (up to 400 words) and references.

2. KUNSKAPSHISTORISK SOMMARSKOLA I LUND
Den 22–25 augusti 2023 arrangerar Centrum för kunskapshistoria, Lunds universitet (LUCK), för fjärde året Kunskapshistorisk sommarskola. Sommarskolan kommer att ge fördjupande orientering i det expanderande fältet kunskapshistoria (videnshistorie, kunnskapshistorie, history of knowledge). LUCK är en ledande institution i utvecklingen av kunskapshistorisk forskning och sommarskolan erbjuder en unik möjlighet att möta erfarna forskare inom fältet, liksom doktorander och yngre forskare med närliggande intressen. Kursen är öppen för doktorander och nydisputerade från hela Norden. Mer specifikt kommer sommarskolan att erbjuda:
• Feedback på deltagarnas pågående eller planerade forskningsprojekt
• Föreläsningar om pågående forskning av verksamma historiker
• Workshops och seminarier kring ny kunskapshistorisk litteratur
• Seminarium kring forskningens process och vetenskaplig praktik
Arbetsspråket kommer att vara skandinaviska (svenska/danska/norska) och vi välkomnar sökande med historiska intressen från alla humanistiska och samhällsvetenskapliga ämnen.
Ansökningar kan skrivas på något av de skandinaviska språken eller engelska och ska innehålla:
1) kort CV (max en sida)
2) abstract över avhandlingsprojektet/det planerade forskningsprojektet, inklusive en kort reflektion över varför ditt arbete kan befrämjas av en anknytning till det kunskapshistoriska fältet (max en sida).
Kursen inleds med en kort introduktion via Zoom. Inför kursen kommer deltagarna att få en litteraturlista för förberedande inläsning, samt i början av augusti ombedjas skicka in ett något utförligare underlag rörande det egna arbetet.
Sommarskolan motsvarar 5 ECTS-poäng. Intyg ges för genomförd kurs. Deltagande i sommarskolan är kostnadsfritt; luncher och en gemensam middag ingår. Boende samt resa till Lund och övriga omkostnader står deltagarna själva för. Genom universitetet kan vi hjälpa till att boka logi till ett fördelaktigt pris.
