3. PROF. DAVID MITCH HEDERSDOKTOR VID UPPSALA UNIVERSITET
Ur pressmeddelandet:
<< Professor David Mitch has studied the economic history of education since the late 1970s. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a remarkable ability to identify and explore fundamental issues within this field of research, using a combination of traditional historical evidence and advanced statistical methods in extensive empirical investigations. An excellent example of this approach is the densely written monograph “The Rise of Popular Literacy in Victorian England” (1992). Mitch’s scholarship has extended over a wide variety of issues. He has, for example, made fundamental contributions to the study of literacy, and significant analyses of the relationship between education, human capital, and economic growth. His innovative research into the role played by parental choice, government involvement and the market in the expansion of mass education, also presents his scholarship with a lasting value. The conferment ceremony will take place in January 2014.>>

5. KEVIN J. BEHONY, 1948-2013
From: Kristen D. Nawrotzki, kdnawrotzki@gmail.com
“The historian of education Professor Kevin J. Brehony passed away on Tuesday, 15 October 2013, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Kevin was Froebel Professor of Early Childhood Studies, President of the International Froebel Society, Director of the University of Roehampton’s Early Childhood Research Centre, and a member of the Froebel Research Committee. He was a renowned and rigorous scholar of Friedrich Froebel, a dedicated mentor, and beloved colleague and friend. He made a vital contribution to the International Froebel Society – most recently as its president — and he will be sorely missed.

Kevin had an international reputation for his research on education policy, history of education, Froebel, historical sociology, and qualitative methods. His numerous publications include oft-cited chapters in edited volumes along with more than 60 articles in leading professional journals. His article ‘A new education for a new era: the contribution of the conferences of the New Education Fellowship to the disciplinary field of education 1921-1938’, published in the International Journal of the History of Education Paedagogica Historica, is ranked that esteemed journal’s ‘most read’. He served as a member of the editorial board and guest editor of another of the field’s most highly-regarded international journals, that of the History of Education Society. Beyond his research, Kevin was well known for his dedication to his students. He mentored a number of undergraduate, masters and PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, many of whom now teach Early Childhood Studies in education departments across the United Kingdom and around the world. Kevin was admired by his colleagues not only for his professional accomplishments and intellectual rigour, but also for his kindness, generosity, and dedication. Many of his colleagues in the UK and abroad and numerous correspondents around the globe benefitted from his advice. His many acts of selflessness will long be remembered. Professor Brehony, aged 65, is survived by his wife, Professor Rosemary Deem OBE.”

(1999) ‘Even far distant Japan’ is ‘showing an interest’: the Froebelian movement’s turn to Sloyd, History of Education, 27, 3, pp.279-295.

(2000) ‘The kindergarten in England 1851-1918’, in Wollons, R. (ed) Kindergartens and Cultures: the global diffusion of an idea. Yale, Yale University Press, 59-86.
