3. NORDIC JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL HISTORY PÅ NORSKA LISTAN
(vidarebefordra gärna till era respektive nätverk!)

In the past year the NJEdH (http://ojs.ub.umu.se/index.php/njedh/) has published two issues with a total of 9 high quality articles. The journal has also been acknowledged as an approved publication channel for Nordic researchers by some very important authorities. The most important is probably the Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals, Series and Publishers, which is used in order to evaluate and assess research, not only by Norwegian research councils and universities, but also by other Nordic research councils and universities all over Scandinavia. As for quantitative evaluations, an article in the NJEdH is now on par with an article in many of the most important journals in the field, including Paedagocia Historica. Other databases that has listed the NJEdH as an authorized publication channel includes the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science.

Future issues of the NJEdH include the special issue of this spring (vol. 2, no. 1): Educational Finance, which is edited by Associate Professor Johannes Westberg, Uppsala University. Next spring-issue (vol. 3, no. 1) will probably be a special issue from the 6th Nordic Conference on the History of Education (to be held in Uppsala, August 2015). Starting this spring we will also include a review section in the journal. We welcome submissions of books that deal with the history of education, especially in the Nordic context, for review.
Well written manuscripts on the educational past of the Nordic region are always welcome to be submitted on the website (http://ojs.ub.umu.se/index.php/njedh/about/submissions), and the autumn issues of both 2015 and 2016 will be freestanding open issues. Your submission is welcome!

Abstract

2. NEW E-JOURNAL: NORDIC JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL HISTORY (NJEDH)

The Nordic Journal of Educational History (NJEDH) is an interdisciplinary journal dedicated to scholarly excellence in the field of educational history. Its aim is to provide historians of education conducting research of particular relevance to the Nordic region (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and political and geographic entities including the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Sápmi and Åland) and its educational contexts with a portal for communicating and disseminating their research.

The journal applies a double blind peer review procedure and is accessible to all interested readers (no fees are charged for publication or subscription). The publishing language is English and the Nordic/Scandinavian languages. The NJEDH will publish two issues per year (spring and autumn).

You will find the opening issue of the NJEDH along with additional information about the journal on the webpage: http://ojs.ub.umu.se/index.php/njedh/index.

Please help us spread this information to your colleagues and to other relevant contacts!

Methods – Messages – Manifestations
Traditions and challenges in the history of education and childhood
The 6th Nordic Conference on the History of Education
The Department of Education, Aarhus University, Campus Emdrup, Copenhagen, 29 – 31 October 2014

Programme and call for papers
When schools and educational politics are on the agenda, so is inevitably, the history of education! An abundance of histories on childhood and institutions, on learning and discipline, and on schooling and school systems is present – directly or indirectly – when politicians, school leaders and teachers’ unions explain their positions, or even when schools and other educational institutions brand themselves.

Histories of education are also present on a more personal level. Because educational experiences form an important part of most childhoods, narratives of schools and other institutions, of teachers and learning environments, often play an essential role when individuals tell stories of their childhood or share memories of school years, which shaped their lives. Thus, histories of education and of childhood cannot be separated – neither from each other nor from the agendas of modern educational politics.

The year 2014 marks the bicentenary of the Danish School Act of 1814. As part of the commemorative celebrations, histories of education will be brought to the fore in a variety of settings. The commemoration is therefore an opportune occasion to reflect upon and discuss the ways in which the history of education is used in political and public contexts, as well as in more private and personal settings.

The 6th Nordic Conference on the History of Education (6NCHE) will explore the connections between past and present opinions on education and between histories of childhood and histories of schools and other educational institutions. The third day of the conference, 31st October, will be open to the public and research projects from the Scandinavian countries will be presented, the language will be a mix of English and the Scandinavian languages.

3. PROF. DAVID MITCH HEDERSDOKTOR VID UPPSALA UNIVERSITET
Ur pressmeddelandet:
<< Professor David Mitch has studied the economic history of education since the late 1970s. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a remarkable ability to identify and explore fundamental issues within this field of research, using a combination of traditional historical evidence and advanced statistical methods in extensive empirical investigations. An excellent example of this approach is the densely written monograph “The Rise of Popular Literacy in Victorian England” (1992). Mitch’s scholarship has extended over a wide variety of issues. He has, for example, made fundamental contributions to the study of literacy, and significant analyses of the relationship between education, human capital, and economic growth. His innovative research into the role played by parental choice, government involvement and the market in the expansion of mass education, also presents his scholarship with a lasting value. The conferment ceremony will take place in January 2014.>>

5. KEVIN J. BEHONY, 1948-2013
From: Kristen D. Nawrotzki, kdnawrotzki@gmail.com
“The historian of education Professor Kevin J. Brehony passed away on Tuesday, 15 October 2013, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Kevin was Froebel Professor of Early Childhood Studies, President of the International Froebel Society, Director of the University of Roehampton’s Early Childhood Research Centre, and a member of the Froebel Research Committee. He was a renowned and rigorous scholar of Friedrich Froebel, a dedicated mentor, and beloved colleague and friend. He made a vital contribution to the International Froebel Society – most recently as its president — and he will be sorely missed.

Kevin had an international reputation for his research on education policy, history of education, Froebel, historical sociology, and qualitative methods. His numerous publications include oft-cited chapters in edited volumes along with more than 60 articles in leading professional journals. His article ‘A new education for a new era: the contribution of the conferences of the New Education Fellowship to the disciplinary field of education 1921-1938’, published in the International Journal of the History of Education Paedagogica Historica, is ranked that esteemed journal’s ‘most read’. He served as a member of the editorial board and guest editor of another of the field’s most highly-regarded international journals, that of the History of Education Society. Beyond his research, Kevin was well known for his dedication to his students. He mentored a number of undergraduate, masters and PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, many of whom now teach Early Childhood Studies in education departments across the United Kingdom and around the world. Kevin was admired by his colleagues not only for his professional accomplishments and intellectual rigour, but also for his kindness, generosity, and dedication. Many of his colleagues in the UK and abroad and numerous correspondents around the globe benefitted from his advice. His many acts of selflessness will long be remembered. Professor Brehony, aged 65, is survived by his wife, Professor Rosemary Deem OBE.”
