The successful candidate will be based in the Institute for Applied Education Sciences with in the Research Unit for Education, Culture, Cognition and Society. The candidate will be working the field of educational sciences and history of education and will contribute the research program led by Dr. Christina Siry. In particular, s/he will have an active role in the SciPol:Lux research project, which seeks to gain insights into the policy and curricular reform of science education in Luxembourg’s primary schools through a state of the art approach that integrates research in educational sciences with research in the history of education.

Your Role:
•Engage in historical data collection, focusing on the development of science education in Luxembourg as well as internationally, from the 1920s to the present,
•Undertake transnational, national, and local historical analyses, utilizing archival resources in Luxembourg and abroad, as needed.
•Preparation of single-authored and co-authored publications,
•Disseminate findings from the study, including at international conferences and research exchanges,
•Communicate and collaborate with research team, including partner teachers, educational policy makers, and researchers,
•Engage in miscellaneous administrative tasks within the project.

Profile:
•hold a PhD in Education, or a related field, with a strong foundation in history of education and historical research methods.
•Fluency in German and English required, proficiency in French and / or Luxembourgish is considered an asset.

Programme and call for papers
When schools and educational politics are on the agenda, so is inevitably, the history of education! An abundance of histories on childhood and institutions, on learning and discipline, and on schooling and school systems is present – directly or indirectly – when politicians, school leaders and teachers’ unions explain their positions, or even when schools and other educational institutions brand themselves.

Histories of education are also present on a more personal level. Because educational experiences form an important part of most childhoods, narratives of schools and other institutions, of teachers and learning environments, often play an essential role when individuals tell stories of their childhood or share memories of school years, which shaped their lives. Thus, histories of education and of childhood cannot be separated – neither from each other nor from the agendas of modern educational politics.

The year 2014 marks the bicentenary of the Danish School Act of 1814. As part of the commemorative celebrations, histories of education will be brought to the fore in a variety of settings. The commemoration is therefore an opportune occasion to reflect upon and discuss the ways in which the history of education is used in political and public contexts, as well as in more private and personal settings.

The 6th Nordic Conference on the History of Education (6NCHE) will explore the connections between past and present opinions on education and between histories of childhood and histories of schools and other educational institutions. The third day of the conference, 31st October, will be open to the public and research projects from the Scandinavian countries will be presented, the language will be a mix of English and the Scandinavian languages.

Historia med utbildningsvetenskaplig inriktning vid Umeå universitet bjuder in till en work-shop om bildningsbegreppets aktualitet i rådande utbildningspolitiska klimat, 12–13 mars 2014. Verksamma forskare inom humaniora – i synnerhet doktorander – bjuds in att diskutera sin forskning i relation till bildningsbegreppet. Inbjudna forskare är Lars Lövlie, professor emeritus i pedagogisk filosofi, Universitetet i Oslo och Anders Burman, docent i idéhistoria, Södertörns högskola. Proposals are invited for panels and for individual papers for ISCHE 36. Papers should address the Education, War and Peace conference theme, which you can read more about here. Papers may be given in English, French, German or Spanish. Panel proposals are especially encouraged (further details below). Abstracts must be a maximum of 500 words including bibliography.

All proposals must be submitted using the online submission form.

The deadline for the submission of paper and panel proposals is now Monday 9 December 2013. Applicants will be notified of the acceptance or rejection of proposals by 31 January 2014.

For those presenting papers and/or convening panels at the conference, the deadline for registration is 30 April 2014. Failure to register by this deadline will result in removal from the conference programme and book of abstracts.

3. CFP: VERDEN I SKOLEN, SKOLEN I VERDEN. UDDANNELSESHISTORIE 2013
Globale perspektiver på uddannelseshistorie. Til tidsskriftet: Uddannelseshistorie 2013.

Nyere tendenser i international historisk uddannelsesforskning udfordrer nationalstaten som grundlæggende kategori for historieskrivningen. Forskning i f.eks. reformpædagogikkens udbredelse viser at denne periode var ”næsten” lige så global som den nuværende periode med store transnationale aktører. Der indbydes til artikler til Årbog for Uddannelseshistorie 2013 udgivet af Selskabet for Skole- og Uddannelseshistorie, som tematiserer sådanne overnationale tendenser og/eller internationale netværksanalyser inden for uddannelseshistorie. Vi efterspørger eksempler, hvor det internationale gør sig gældende på måder, der udfordrer det traditionelle nationale blik på uddannelseshistorie. Mulige emner for sådanne artikler kunne være en af de bølger af globalisering, der har præget den moderne pædagogik og uddannelsesudvikling. Den indbyrdes undervisning fik f.eks. global udbredelse ca. 1800. Reform-pædagogikken ca. 1900 havde som nævnt efter mange iagttageres synspunkter en netværkskarakter, der var internationalt overgribende. Endelig kan den nyere uddannelsesudvikling forstås ud fra et globalt perspektiv med overskrifter som ny-liberalisme, decentralisering, frit skolevalg, statslige-private partnerskaber, udlicitering, LLL og internationalisering af universiteterne som en del af den globale uddannelsesstrategi. Vi indbyder til analyserende artikler, der eksplicit tager stilling til globale processer og ideers udbredelse og deres nationale receptioner.

The development of School mathematics and reforms of the Swedish school system in the 20th century: A comparative and historical study of changes of contents, methods and institutional conditions

The project aims to examine how Swedish school mathematics change in primary school (Year 4-9) during the period 1910-2010 and to identify mechanisms that have influenced the choice of content and methods.

The main question concerns how general school reforms and other attempts to reform school mathematics have impact on educational texts. The focus is on the production of educational texts; both the textual contents and the social conditions for the production of educational texts are studied.

The main material is policy documents, textbooks, teachers’ magazines, books on teaching and exams. The analysis of textual content is based on concepts from curriculum theory: goals, content and method. The project also includes a sociological study of the people who produced the educational texts. The sociological analysis has a prosopographical approach and is based on Bourdieu’s theory of field and capital. In order to discern what is typical for changes in Swedish school mathematics, comparisons are made between Sweden and Germany during the period 1910-2010. Material and people from both Sweden and Germany is studied.
