1. CfP: SCHOOLS AND THE MANAGEMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH
Special issue call for papers from History of Education Review: Schools and the management of public health

Schools have a long history of intervention in the health of children and adolescents. Their implication in the administration and management of public health has impacted significantly on relationships between family, school and the state, and on ideas about the role of the school in the creation of healthy, productive citizens. Understandings of health and hygiene have had ongoing and changing moral and political dimensions, and concerns about health have varied across gender, sexuality, race, social class, age and place. Further, shifting meanings of health and illness in schools have continued to reflect and produce contested views of difference.

The journal History of Education Review will publish an international special issue focusing on the historical involvement of schools in the production, management and bureaucratization of public health. A wide variety of topics related to this history will be considered, including but not limited to:
gender and gendered understandings of the body and education, sex, sexuality and bodily discipline, family-school-community relations, citizenship and governing, colonialisation, race, assimilation and eugenics, hygiene, vaccination and civic morality, nutrition, food provision, obesity and healthy eating, (early) childhood and adolescence, parents’ role in public health programs, communicable diseases and ideas about illness and wellness
class, social control and the economics of public health, changing and contested conceptions of expertise and professional knowledge around medicine, psychology, school teaching and parenting, teachers’ health and wellbeing, buildings, classrooms and school design.

In the first instance please submit a detailed paper proposal (1000 words maximum) to Dr Helen Proctor, Faculty of Education and Social Work, University of Sydney: Helen.proctor@sydney.edu.au, by 31 January, 2015.
Full papers (from accepted proposals) will be due 31 January, 2016.

3. DOKTORANDUTLYSNINGAR I LINKÖPING
Linköpings universitet söker för närvarande doktorander inom två utlysningar där historiestudenter kan komma i fråga:

3-5 doktorander ska antas i ”Tema Kultur och samhälle” (Tema Q), vilket kan vara historia med någon form av kulturhistorisk anknytning. 2 doktorander ska antas i ”pedagogiskt arbete med inriktning mot samhällsämnenas didaktik”, vilket kan vara historiedidaktik.

5. DANSK SKOLEHISTORIE GENNEM 500 ÅR. METODER OG KONKLUSIONER – VIDNER OG DEBAT
Konference i København i anledning af udgivelsen af Dansk Skolehistorie.

Dato fre 21 nov, Tid 09:00 — 16:30. Sted Festsalen, Institut for Uddannelses og Pædagogik (DPU), Aarhus Universitet, Campus Emdrup, Tuborgvej 164, 2400 København NV.

I 2014 er det 200 år siden, at Kong Frederik d. 6. underskrev de skolelove, der fastslog undervisningspligt for alle danske børn. En gruppe på 12 forskere har i den anledning gennem fem år udarbejdet et fembindsværk om de sidste 500 års skolehistorie. De fem bind fortæller skolens historie fra et hverdagsperspektiv, hvor forældre, lærere og elever kommer til orde – ligesom læseren møder en mangfoldighed af offentlige skoler og frie grundskoler i mange forskellige egne af Danmark. Fra dengang læreren holdt skole, over da skolerne tog form og en egen pædagogisk lærerfaglighed voksede og frem til nutidens skolereform, lærerlockout og inklusion.

På konferencen bliver der lejlighed til at høre forfatterne til de enkelte bind præsentere de nye fortællinger og sammenhænge, som de har gravet frem fra arkivkasserne og bibliotekernes støvedehylder, og det vil også være muligt at se nogle af værkets over 1000 illustrationer.

Eftermiddagen byder på et seminar, hvor et panel af historiske vidner og aktører, som har bidraget til formgivningen af dagens skole gennem de seneste fire årtier, fortæller om deres arbejde, oplevelser og erfaringer. Ordstyrer på denne del vil være den mangeårige kender af folkeskolen og tidligere redaktør af fagbladet Folkeskolen, Thorkild Thejsen.

Dagen henvender sig til alle med interesse for skolens fortid, nutid – og fremtid, hvad enten det er lærerstuderende, lærere, ledere – eller den brede offentlighed.
