1. CfP: SCHOOLS AND THE MANAGEMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH
Special issue call for papers from History of Education Review: Schools and the management of public health

Schools have a long history of intervention in the health of children and adolescents. Their implication in the administration and management of public health has impacted significantly on relationships between family, school and the state, and on ideas about the role of the school in the creation of healthy, productive citizens. Understandings of health and hygiene have had ongoing and changing moral and political dimensions, and concerns about health have varied across gender, sexuality, race, social class, age and place. Further, shifting meanings of health and illness in schools have continued to reflect and produce contested views of difference.

The journal History of Education Review will publish an international special issue focusing on the historical involvement of schools in the production, management and bureaucratization of public health. A wide variety of topics related to this history will be considered, including but not limited to:
gender and gendered understandings of the body and education, sex, sexuality and bodily discipline, family-school-community relations, citizenship and governing, colonialisation, race, assimilation and eugenics, hygiene, vaccination and civic morality, nutrition, food provision, obesity and healthy eating, (early) childhood and adolescence, parents’ role in public health programs, communicable diseases and ideas about illness and wellness
class, social control and the economics of public health, changing and contested conceptions of expertise and professional knowledge around medicine, psychology, school teaching and parenting, teachers’ health and wellbeing, buildings, classrooms and school design.

In the first instance please submit a detailed paper proposal (1000 words maximum) to Dr Helen Proctor, Faculty of Education and Social Work, University of Sydney: Helen.proctor@sydney.edu.au, by 31 January, 2015.
Full papers (from accepted proposals) will be due 31 January, 2016.

5. DANSK SKOLEHISTORIE GENNEM 500 ÅR. METODER OG KONKLUSIONER – VIDNER OG DEBAT
Konference i København i anledning af udgivelsen af Dansk Skolehistorie.

Dato fre 21 nov, Tid 09:00 — 16:30.

Pris for deltagelse 975,-

The economics of education: The financing of the Swedish elementary school, 1842–1936

The economics of education: The financing of the Swedish elementary school, 1842–1936

During the hundred years that followed the Elementary school act of 1842, the Swedish elementary school system went through an unparalleled development. The number of students doubled from 270 000 in the year 1850 to 605 000 in the year 1950. At the same time the number of teachers rose from 3 500 to 27 500. As a result the costs of the elementary school increased dramatically. Between 1874 and 1942 the expenditures increased from 14 to 268 millions of Swedish kronor, counted in the money value of 1942.

This project deals with the economics of this remarkable development. How was the funding system of these schools designed, in order to cope with expenses that rose nineteen times? How was funds created and distributed in order to finance the increase of the number of teachers? What consequences did such a funding system have for the instruction of the elementary schools? Anglo-Saxon research has shown that the answers to these questions are far from simple. Financing a school system involves balancing demands for higher quality of education with ambitions to keep check of already high costs. It is also a question of choosing between different forms of grants and objects (teacher salaries, school books, schoolhouses etc.). How such decisions were made are the central questions of this project.
